Come explore innovative ways to interact with cultural heritage with us! In this Studio, “Touching History: Designing Digital Papyrus Interactions through Physical Interface”, we will present our project “Papy3D”, which aims to recreate the experience of interacting with ancient Egyptian papyri. Leveraging recent advances in extended reality (XR) and digital twin technologies, we can now design and develop interactive, lifelike replicas of these historical artifacts. In this Studio, participants will not only have the opportunity to engage with a physical scroll of papyrus but also imagine and prototype how it can be used to intuitively interact with a 3D agent in the form of a digital twin within an XR environment. This Studio invites you to explore and design multimodal interactions that bridge the physical and digital realms of ancient history. This project is at destination of both scholars and general public in the museums.

Call for Participation

We invite human-computer interaction researchers to join us on our endeavour to bring ancient papyri to the general public through XR, coupled with a tangible scroll of papyrus. With the help of a physical piece of papyrus, we will explore and design innovative ways to interact with a digital twin.

In the first part, participants will have hands-on access to our digital papyrus setup, which recreates a virtual version of the severely damaged Bodmer 1 papyrus. In the second part, participants will work in groups to design novel interactions using the physical papyrus as interface. We are particularly interested in ways to manipulate (moving, rotating, zooming) and to interrogate (translations, history) the digital papyrus. Together, we’ll prototype and discuss various interaction possibilities that this unique interface offers.

To summarize, we aim to explore, ideate and learn about natural interactions on a digital papyrus through a tangible counterpart in XR for the general public.

Who Should Participate?

This workshop is ideal for:

  • Interaction Designers interested in tangible and hybrid interfaces.
  • Digital Humanities Scholars curious about merging ancient artifacts with digital experiences.
  • UX/UI Researchers focused on innovative user experiences.
  • Technologists and Programmers with a background in interface development or IoT.
  • Artists and Creative Thinkers eager to experiment with digital storytelling through physical media
