Papyrus 3D

Papyrus 3D

Papyri are writing support from ancient Egypt. Papyri take the form of long, rolled-up rolls, which can measure several meters in length when unfolded. Some of them are a unique source of knowledge about antiquity.

The Bodmer 1 papyrus used in this project, for example, is a perfect case study for a better understanding of ancient culture and variations in writing to aid dating. Another advantage of this papyrus is that the recto is a well-known text (the Illiad) whereas the verso is a land cadaster (unknown).

Currently, there is no digital text of this papyrus, only high-quality images that are difficult to use for the uninitiated (especially for matching fragments). For this reason, a 3D restoration and online edition (fragment placement) would be the best way to make this object accessible, despite its complexity. These virtually reconstituted papyri could also be the subject of more sophisticated manipulation studies or dissemination.

This project is a collaboration with the University of Basel and the HEIA-FR HumanTech Institute.
